Dinner at Aperitivo

Super Boy and I went to Leichhardt after work one evening to watch a movie at the Palace Cinema on Norton Street. Since we arrived late for the session, we decided to grab some dinner before the next one. Being in Leichhardt, which is also known as ‘Little Italy’, we couldn’t not have Italian food. Unsure of where to go, a quick Google search led us to Aperitivo.

A quick look at their menu and I already knew what I wanted — Chef’s Choice 5-course degustation. They had a lot on their menu I wanted to try, so I thought this would be the best option.

stuzzichino – seared scallop with smoked mash potato, smoked caviar and squid ink puree

This little appetizer was a nice start.

entree – sliced Tasmanian salmon with avocado mousse, pickled ginger gel and seaweed dust

This entrée was so good. The pickled ginger gel was a nice hit of flavour. I did my best to savour every bite.

entree – gorgonzola soufflé with pear fondue and grated walnuts

The gorgonzola soufflé was so warm and soft, and the pear fondue was deliciously cheesy. I love cheese, but it might be a bit much for those who don’t.

pasta – handmade potato gnocchi with slow cooked octopus ragù and grated black olives

A simple and tasty pasta dish. The gnocchi and octopus were so soft, it almost melted in my mouth.

main – cured tuna belly with caponata

I’m not 100% certain it’s cured tuna belly, but I’m sure I heard the waitress say tuna belly. Anyway, it wasn’t soft or as easy to cut into as I imagined. The caponata was amazing. Together, this dish was a bit too salty for my liking.

pre-dessert – tiramisu

dessert – meringue semifreddo with hazelnut crumb and creme anglaise

A simple dessert to end the meal.

Overall, it was a nice meal that we had. The Chef’s Choice Degustation set us back AU$59pp, which I think is good value. Super Boy thought he might need to get a kebab on the way home, but by the time we finished he said he was pretty full. You can get matching wines for AU$99pp but neither of us were drinking that night. I wouldn’t mind coming back to Aperitivo to try out other things on their menu. Everyone around us got pizzas, so maybe I’ll order that next time.

As for the movie, turns out Super Boy got the times wrong so we ended up walking around Leichhardt for a little exploring instead.
